CBCID forms fresh teams to probe Rs 5.75 crore train heist
Chennai: Groping in the dark for a year, Tamil Nadu crime branch-CID, probing the sensational train heist in which Rs 5.75 crore RBI cash was stolen from Salem-Chennai train after making a hole in the roof of the money wagon, has decided to have a fresh look at the case by reconstituting the teams. “Fresh teams are now probing the case in possible new angles,” a senior CBCID officer said.
“We have not left the case behind. We are re-working on the case and even on Tuesday enquiries were conducted in Salem and Virudhachalam,” said officer, adding that fresh teams will look into angles that may have not been seriously looked into by the investigators in the past.
A total of 1.15 lakh notes of old Rs 500, kept in two boxes, were stolen from the money wagon, attached to the train which reached the Egmore station at 5 am on August 9 last year. The incident happened 3 months before the government scrapped all the old Rs 500 notes.
The RBI was transporting a total of Rs 342.70 crore of old and used notes, collected from various banks in Salem and nearby areas, in the particular wagon on that night and unidentified persons had made a hole by cutting open the roof of the wagon and escaped with Rs 5.75 crore cash, weighing around 132 kg.
The sleuths knew it was well planned and executed by a gang of people as it would have been highly difficult for just one or two persons to carry out the operation. In the last one year, CBCID teams have visited a number of states looking for clues and also to find out if anybody with similar modus operandi was arrested earlier, but had returned empty handed.
