ANANTAPUR: Authorities of the Urdu varsity are being accused of failing to highlight it properly and thus failing to attract students from all parts of the state in its first year. The state government had finalised Kurnool for the establishment of the Dr Abdul Haq Urdu University as the existing Urdu varsity went to TS following bifurcation. The authorities planned to start classes from August 18 and the government allotted 400 acres for the institution near B Thandrapadu in Kurnool mandal, close to the district headquarters.
Contending that only those with sound financial backgrounds have been able to go for higher studies, Muslim elders had represented for an Urdu varsity in Rayalaseema similar to ones in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kalaburgi and in Kashmir. Since Kurnool district has over 7 lakh Muslim population, the CM announced the Urdu varsity at Kurnool.
The Dr Abdul Haq Urdu University was temporarily accommodated at Osmania College in Kurnool city till completion of campus. Rayalaseema University Vice Chancellor Y. Narasimhulu was appointed in-charge V-C.
Though the authorities issued notification, the low number of students who applied for the many courses left the authorities shocked. For both graduation and post graduation, a total of 180 students were eligible to take admission during the first year. However, 30 students took admission.
