Viyyur jail, Swiggy ink pact on food delivery

If the online food deliver experiment from the prison is a success, the authorities would tie up with other online food deliver firms as well.

THIRSSUR: Viyyur Central Prison which created history by starting a food production unit for sale of food items for public in 2011, is repeating it by launching online ‘Freedom Combo Lunch’ by inking a contract with online food delivery firm Swiggy.

The jail officials say that if the upgradation of the app is completed on Wednesday, starting from the next day the combo food package with chicken biryani (300gm), three chapatis, chicken curry, salad, pickle and cup cake along with a litre of mineral water could be booked online for Rs 127. Without mineral water, the rate for the food combo will be Rs 117. The food items from the jail will be provided with a plantain leaf for serving them.

“Director General of Prisons Rishiraj Singh came up with the idea of online food delivery from the prison which has 800 inmates at present. Food unit of the prison has many as 100 prisoners interested in cooking associated with it. The delivery after online booking will be done from 12 p.m to 3 p.m. when the representative of the online firm can collect the packed food item from a special counter set up near the entrance gate to the jail premises,” Superintendent of the jail Nirmalanandan Nair said.

If the online food deliver experiment from the prison is a success, the authorities would tie up with other online food deliver firms as well.

“As compared to the payment given to jail inmates, those who work in the food making unit is given slightly high pay. The combo item will be sold only online and won’t be available at the food counter at jail gate,” Superintendent added.
