Mother-son duo held for TNHB housing fraud

During interrogation, she confessed to having cheated more than 60 persons of Rs 21.50 lakh.

Chennai: A mother and a son from Semmencherry were arrested for cheating at least 60 persons of Rs 21.50 lakh after promising them flats in Tamil Nadu Housing Board.

(TNHB) buildings across the city. V.Chitra (42) and her son V.Robert (25) of Tsunami Nagar in Semmencherry were nabbed after a complaint from A.Ruban Amalraj of Gandhi Nagar in Shollinganallur who gave them at least Rs 50,000 in 2015 for a flat in the TNHB quarters.

Chitra and her son Robert claimed to be in close contact with top TNHB officers and collected money from Ruban.

When they failed to keep their promise, Ruban filed a police complaint with Semmencheryy police. Police said the duo won the trust of some people for whom she got houses at Tsunami Quarters. Soon, more people began approaching them.

They convinced the victims that they could get houses at cheap prices, said an investigating officer. Several people across the city who gave her money two to three years ago grew suspicious when they failed to get any response from her.

All their phone calls to her went unanswered.Based on a complaint from Ruban, Semmenchery police formed a special team to nab the duo. Based on a tip-off, the team went to her house in the TNHB quarters and caught the duo.

During interrogation, she confessed to having cheated more than 60 persons of Rs 21.50 lakh.

Police booked them for cheating and criminal breach of trust. They were arrested and remanded to judicial custody, police said.
