Train kills second jumbo in 19 days
COIMBATORE: Speeding train killed a young tusker near Walayar, the second elephant in just 19 days, on the Tamil Nadu- Kerala border, raising concerns over the safety of elephants in the jumbo corridor. Around 4.30 am on Saturday, the Vishakhapatnam-Kollam weekly express came speeding down, flagrantly violating the speed limit of 30 kmph fixed for the elephant corridors, and knocked down the male elephant. The jumbo fatality occurred when the tusker tried to cross the railway track at Chandrapuram near Walayar in Kerala.
The elephant was found lying dead at about 10-feet away from the railway track. The villagers of Chandrapuram noticed the dead pachyderm around 7am and informed the forest department. The elephant, estimated to be around 10-year-old, was cremated near the Walayar railway station.
