Plea in HC seeks Pondy varsity to publish engineering college rankings online
CHENNAI: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in Madras high court to direct Pondicherry University to publish in its website details of academic performance and ranking of all 18 engineering colleges affiliated to it to enable parents have a clear knowledge and assessment of the colleges. This is necessary to take an appropriate decision regarding admission of their wards into engineering colleges having excellent academic record.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan before whom the PIL filed by M. Perumal of Puducherry came up for hearing, ordered notice to Pondicherry University and posted after a week further hearing of the case. Petitioner’s counsel M. Ravi submitted that petitioner’s daughter had passed plus two in 2014-15 and due to non-publication of academic performance of engineering colleges affiliated to the university, he was not able to admit his daughter in any engineering college in the union territory. Against his family’s wish, he was constrained to admit her in a college affiliated to Anna university in Chennai.
There were 18 government and private engineering colleges in Puducherry affiliated to the Pondicherry University and admissions were being done by a committee known as “CENTAC” functioning at government engineering college, Puducherry, every year. Private engineering colleges have been publishing attractive advertisements in newspapers showing cent per cent performance in the respective colleges and parents were unable to know the factual position for admitting their children, counsel said. Anna University published in its website details of academic performance and ranking of all engineering colleges in 2015, Ravi said.
