Chennai: “Teacher absenteeism is one of the crucial issues in school education as there is a shortage of five lakh teachers in India. Union government should follow the model of South Korea and Finland in school education system,” VIT University chancellor Dr G. Viswanathan at the university’s convocation address on Saturday. About 1,500 undergraduates, postgraduate and doctoral students received their degrees during the convocation.
Seeking change in the educational system, Dr Viswanathan said several medical aspirants had to choose countries like Nepal and Philippines to pursue medical education due to lack of seats in India. Delivering the convocation address, member of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Justice D. Murugesan said, “India is ranked third highest in online cyber bullying as three lakh crimes were reported in 2015.
Instances of cyber-crime have been increasing every year as the 13,301 cases reported in 2011 raised to 1,49,254 in 2014, said Justice Murugesan. “Students should weigh both advantages and disadvantages of social media as constant usage could lead to addiction. Cyber bullying and online harassment have to be addressed at the earliest,” said Justice Murugesan.
