TN Govt's Green award for NIT-Tiruchy

The NIT-Tiruchy has been setting an example in practicing sustainable usage of resources since its inception.

Chennai: The prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchy, has bagged the ‘Green Award, 2017’ presented by the Government of Tamil Nadu to educational institutions for protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development on campus.

The NIT-Tiruchy has been setting an example in practicing sustainable usage of resources since its inception and has regulated the collection and processing of electronic waste and organizes regular tree-plantation drives and guest lectures. To conserve energy, battery-operated vehicles are used to ferry people around campus. Most importantly, a stringent environmental policy has been formulated with a budget allocated for environmental protection and maintenance.

The institution has also been able to adopt five villages under the ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’, a national welfare scheme where higher education institutions assist rural areas with professional resources. Professor Mini Shaji Thomas, director, NIT-Tiruchy received the award from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami in Chennai and congratulated all the members of the NIT-Tiruchy family, including the staff and students and for achieving this feat.
