Rain wreaks havoc in Dakshina Kannada, woman washed away in floods

National Highway near Charmadi Ghat was closed for over one hour as tree fell on the Highway at Mundaje Ambadhyar on Saturday morning.

Mangaluru: Following heavy rain in the coastal district, a woman was washed away in the river at Shirlal village of Belthangady Taluk on Saturday.
The woman was identified as Revathi (50).

With the monsoon gaining momentum in coastal districts, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are receiving heavy rain since two days. Schools remained closed in Udupi and DK districts on Saturday as per the order of deputy commissioners of two districts. Heavy rain was accompanied with wind in most part of the district.

As it was week end and as Charmadi Ghat road is the alternative road connecting DK and mainland Karnataka, due to the closure of Shiradi Ghat for repair, the number of vehicle was more on the road.

Traffic continued to flow after the tree was cleared by the authorities.Few cases of damage to house were reported due to rain and wind in DK and Udupi. Rivers are brimming with rain water. However no major flooding has been reported.

In Mangaluru city an old building collapsed at Bhavanti Street and a transformer was damaged after tree fell on it at Pachanady in the City. Rescue teams and disaster management teams are on standby.
