Hyderabad: Reliance Insurance gets rap over policy proceeds

They stated that the claim made by Ms Padma was false because no documents were submitted to prove the death.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad consumer forum rapped Reliance General Insurance Company and Reliance Infratel following a complaint by Adilabad resident S. Padma that the insurance company did not pay her the policy amount after the death of her husband, a policy holder, in a motorcycle accident.

Ms Padma’s husband died on October 5, 2011, after a SUV hit his motorcycle. He was covered under an insurance policy from June 25 for an amount of Rs 2 lakh. A case was registered against the driver of the SUV in Bhainsa police station, Adilabad district.

Despite repeated claims, Reliance Insurance remained silent; it neither paid the policy amount nor replied to Ms Padma. She said that she suffered mental agony and had to undergo a lot of financial troubles.

Reliance Insurance and Reliance Infratel contended that they were not aware of the death, and that they should have been intimidated within a week. They stated that the claim made by Ms Padma was false because no documents were submitted to prove the death.

They stated that the complainant’s husband was a policy holder of a scheme that guaranteed Rs 70,000 and not Rs 2 lakh. The forum stated that there was no doubt it was an accidental death and that the company was supposed to have paid the policy amount to Ms Padma.

The companies were asked to pay the Rs 2 lakh policy amount and damages of Rs 34,000 with an interest of 9 per cent per annum along with costs of Rs 1,000.
