Farmers led by Ayyakannu begin second round of protest in Chennai
CHENNAI: With their demands not being met by state and Central governments, farmers led by Ayyakannu on Friday began their second round of protests here and warned of shifting their agitation to New Delhi if the administrations continue to show apathy towards their problems.
The farmers who gathered outside Chepauk stadium on Friday morning began their 32-day long protest demanding constitution of Cauvery Management Board and special relief package for drough-hit farmers in TN.
The farmers, who held 41-day protest in New Delhi and called it off after an assurance from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, said they have been ‘cheated’ by both governments and hence they have decided to resume their agitation.
"Keep the promise you made, withdraw the case from Supreme Court and give pension to farmers above 60 yrs. We will be here for 32 days and we will continue to sit here if problem is not solved by then. We will expand agitation all over India," Mr Ayyakannu said.
The farmers had grabbed headlines for their unique and sometimes bizarre methods of protest since they arrived in Delhi to protest.
Adorned with human skulls around their necks, the farmers attempted to grab the attention of authorities towards their condition and demands for drought relief package.
