Medical colleges: MCI fiat to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

The colleges did not have faculty in place as per MCI norms. Only 10 per cent staff had been appointed.

Hyderabad: The Medical Council of India has issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments for granting permission to private medical colleges that do not have adequate infrastructure like hostels, libraries and hospital buildings.

MCI inspectors had found that at some of these hospitals, in both states, construction was still going on. According to sources in the Medical and Family Welfare Department, the principal secretaries of health of both the states have been asked why the applications of these medical colleges were cleared.

The colleges in Telangana are the recently approved ESIC Medical College at Sanathnagar in Hyderabad, that of A.S. Educational Society in Medak, St. Augustin Education Society and the BMMT Institute of Education in Ranga Reddy district.

The colleges in Andhra Pradesh are the Gayathri Vidya Parishad Society in Visakhapatnam, Apollo Hospitals, the Education Research Foundation in Chittoor and the NIMRA Education Society in Krishna district. These were found deficient by the MCI and denied permission, according to sources in the health department.

A senior TS health official said, “There is no proper faculty in place as per MCI norms. Only 10 per cent staff has been appointed and 90 per cent of them visit only when an MCI inspector arrives. The medical college hospitals do not have intensive care units, blood banks or patients. The patients present were fake and they could be easily identified.”

According to MCI norms, colleges have to appoint a superintendent, a dean and assistant professors before applying for permission. Also, adequate infrastructure facilities must be available. But despite serious shortcomings permissions were granted in both the states.
