Uttar Pradesh MLA stops rebuilding of mosque

The mosque at Devli village was demolished two months ago for repairs and a new building was being constructed at the spot.

Lucknow: A BJP MLA, Kamal Singh Malik, triggered a fresh row on Sunday by stopping Muslims from rebuilding a 200-year old mosque near here.

The mosque at Devli village was demolished two months ago for repairs and a new building was being constructed at the spot.

According to reports, Kamal Singh Malik, from Simbhauli Assembly segment in Hapur district, arrived at the site with several supporters and asked the Muslim workers to stop construction.

The BJP MLA also said that he would allow further construction only after a written permission from the local administration was produced.

Earlier, the villagers had also warned that they would not allow the mosque’s rebuilding. Youths gathered outside homes on Saturday night shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, reports said.

This has led to tension in the village and a complaint has been filed with the district magistrate. The complainants have requested officials to take immediate action against the troublemakers in the village.
