Hyderabad: Taps to go dry as pipeline damaged

However, officials from the HMWSSB have repaired the pipeline by evening but supply had to be stopped for the replacements of the joints.

Hyderabad: Water supply to parts of the city will be hit for two days following damage of joints of the main pipeline of Godavari waters.Due to the rising temperature and heat in Karimnagar district, especially at Manair, the pipeline joints at the Manair Bridge got damaged on Sunday morning. However, officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board have repaired the pipeline by evening but supply had to be stopped for the replacements of the joints.

Projects director of HMWSSB M. Yella Swamy said the repairs were taken up on a war footing and the supply was restored, but it may take some time in reaching the waters to city. Another official said that the 114 MGDs of water was being supplied from River Godavari and it might take at least two days to restore normalcy in water supply for three major areas – Serilingampally, Kukatpally and Banjara Hills.

“Except for the IT corridor and the Banjara Hills, the city is drawing Krishna water,” the official said. GM of HMWSSB P. Venkateswar Rao said the about 6 MGDs of water was being supplied to Madhapur, the heart of the IT corridor.

“There may be a 20 per cent impact on the supply in the coming two days but we are planning to supply water from Singur as an alternative. We are expecting 9 MGDs of Singur water to Lingampally Campus Reservoir and from there to Madhapur. At present, we have good storage of water in all the reservoirs and there will no scarcity of water,” he said.
