Chennai: A 34-year-old woman ended her life by setting herself on fire at her house at Uthukottai in neighbouring Tiruvallur district, after her friend’s husband and two others abused her suspecting her fidelity on Friday. Police identified the deceased as S. Sumithra, 34, wife of Sampath, a daily wage worker.
Sumithra immolated self at her house soon after her friend Sabitha’s husband Asokan and two other relatives abused her. The injured Sumithra was taken to Kilpauk Medical College hospital, where she died.
Police registered a case of abetting suicide and arrested Asokan and launched a hunt for two others. Police said Sumithra had befriended Sabitha while travelling by bus.
On Friday, Sabitha abused Sumithra for talking to her brother-in-law Sundar, who works as a car driver. After a verbal duel, the women attacked each other. On reaching home, Sabitha complained to Asokan about the incident and he went to Sumithra’s house and entered into an altercation. After the incident, Sumithra killed herself, the police said.
