Both stand to gain, says Dr T Ravi Raju

State plans to attach VIMS as a university super-speciality hospital to NTRUHS.

Visakhapatnam: Dr NTR University of Health Sciences is going to conduct web-based counselling for admissions into postgraduate medical and diploma courses for the academic year 2016-17, for the first time in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, informed its Vice-Chancellor Dr Ravi Raju. Speaking to the scribes here on Saturday, Dr Raju informed that web-based counselling would ease the challenges associated with the counselling procedure for students.

“The web-based counselling carried out for nursing admissions three months ago passed off smoothly. According to the Medical Council of India guidelines, the first phase admissions should be completed by May 2. The verification of certificates for the Andhra Pradesh students would be done between April 20 and 23 in Visakhapatnam, Vijaya-wada, Tirupati and Hyderabad centres. Thereafter, the students can exercise their options between April 21 and 25,” he said.

“Successful candidates would receive their allotment through SMS. Other than the change in the process of counselling, no alterations were made in the basis for seat allotment, such as constitutional reservations or others,” he added.
“Earlier, every PG medical aspirant was required to attend counselling in Vijayawada. Now, once the certificate verification is over at their respective centres, they can exercise their options from anywhere, he said. For Telangana region, we have set up three centres for certificate verification, including Vijayawada, Warangal and Hyderabad, and the dates of verification and online option exercising would differ from Andhra Pradesh students,” Dr Raju added.

When asked about the government’s purported move of attaching the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences as a university super-speciality hospital to the NTRUHS, Dr Ravi Raju said that the move would have mutual benefits, such as better medical research, education and infrastructure. “But, we didn’t receive the modality of attachment and once we receive the official confirmation, we would look into the matter as to how this could help both,” Dr Ravi Raju added.
While the medical colleges within the Andhra University region have 941 seats, the colleges within the Sri Venkateswara University have 471 seats and the colleges in the Osmania University limits have 1,114 seats.
