The average lifespan of a person suffering from Thallasemia is 26 years.

Warangal: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Warangal has launched thalassemia syringe transfusion pumps which help the patients at the blood transfusion centre in Hanamko

nda to manage the iron levels in their body which is always in excess due to blood transfusion every two weeks.

District collector and president of IRCS, Warangal, Prashanth J. Patil launched the pumps here on Saturday in the presence of thalassemia patients and their parents. Mr Prashanth said these transfusion syringes would help in increasing the lifespan of the patients. The average lifespan of a person suffering from Thallasemia is 26 years.

“With the help of ventilator support a person can survive for just days or months. But it is amazing to know a blood chelation pump can double the lifespan of a person. IRCS Warangal is the first in south India to provide this facility to the patients”, he said.

Mr Prashanth further added that he would do his level best to provide better facilities to the patients who travelled from various neighbouring districts to the transfusion centre. About 259 patients receive free treatment at the centre presently.

“For the people who visit regularly, we will coordinate with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) to issue concessional bus passes to them. At the same time, we will propose for government schemes like Aarogysri to be applied to the thalassemia patients also. I will personally bring this issue to the notice of the higher officials. We will also take the help of philanthropists to further develop the facilities provided at the IRCS.”

IRCS president Dr P. Vijay Kumar Reddy, Vice chairman Dr K. Sudhakar Reddy, treasurer M. Nagaiah, state managing committee member E. V. Srinivas and others were present.
