Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today announced in the state Assembly that work on the 'waste to energy' project at Deonar dumping ground in Mumbai will begin soon.
"The post of Chief Engineer of Solid Waste Department, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will be filled up soon," Fadnavis said during a debate on a calling attention notice on the Deonar dumping ground fire.
"Housing societies should segregate dry and wet waste," he said.
Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded a CID probe into the Deonar fire.
Parts of the megapolis had been engulfed in a thick blanket of smog for days after the fire broke at Deonar dumping ground on January 28.
Fadnavis had sought a report on the fire that swept through the biggest dumping facility in the city for nearly five days causing toxic pollution that raised health concerns for the citizens.
During the fire, the Air Quality Index was at par with air quality levels of Delhi. Air quality had fallen in the "very poor" category, showing heavy pollutants in the air, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide.
