Rameswaram: A 12-day ‘Vedic chanting’ from the ‘Krishna Yajur Veda’, praying for world peace and part of the ‘Mahashivaratri’ celebrations, has concluded in this ancient pilgrim island. The event was organised at the Sringeri Saradha Peetam mutt branch, said Sri Swaminatha Sharma, a Vedic scholar here on Wednesday.
The festivities seek to celebrate the ‘greatness of Lord Shiva’, re-enact the ‘Puranic’ stories of how in vain Lord Brahma went in search of the top of Shiva’s matted hair and Lord Vishnu went in search of Shiva’s feet to no avail, as part of the ‘Shivaratri’ celebrations at the Sringeri Mutt. Along with that, Sri Sharma said the chanting from ‘Krishna Yajur Veda’ is also done during the ‘Shivratri Vridha Kaalam (observance of vows)’, which began on February 26 and concluded on March 8, he pointed out.
Pundits trained well in the recitation of the Vedas chanted the Mantras to everyone’s delight and for the general welfare of the world, he said. The president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)’s Tamil Nadu chapter, Mr Vedantham was a special guest of honour to participate in the function, he said, adding, special ‘pujas’ were also performed on Tuesday, the last day, of the ‘Shivratri’ festivities. Vedantham, later speaking to reporters here said that security for Hindu religious heads in the country had become a question mark.
