Temperatures to soar further: Met dept of Karnataka

Rise in mercury is because of absence of Easterly waves.

Bengaluru: Temperatures are soaring and city-dwellers are feeling the heat. Just a week into March and people are already wishing for rains and cloudy skies. But the weatherman expects temperatures to rise further.

“The mercury touched 34.9 degrees Celsius which is three degrees above normal on Wednesday. The trend is likely to continue and the temperatures might soar,” said Dr Geeta Agnihotri, Director, Met Department, Bengaluru.

The reason for the rise in temperature is because of no activity of Easterly waves. “There has not been any activity of easterly waves which generally are active from January to March and it is these waves which bring in clouds, moisture and rains. There will be no thunder activity because of this phenomenon and the temperature will continue to go up for a few more days,” she said.

Mr B. Puttana, former director, IMD-Bengaluru, also explained that clear skies over the city are playing a key role in the temperature going up. “As there is no cloud to obstruct the solar radiation, the temperature is high,” he said.

He said, “The temperature has increased and many stations in North Karnataka have recorded above-normal temperatures. The temperature will be high because the summer is setting in.”
