Kerala CPM softens WB line

Bengal unit wants alliance with Cong to check division of anti-TMC votes.

Thiruvananthapuram: The state unit of CPM seems to have softened its stand on the Bengal party's move to have a tie up with the Congress in West Bengal.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan have emphasised on the need to defeat the BJP in the coming polls.

The Kerala CPM is aware of the ground reality in West Bengal where the party is fighting the terror unleashed by the Trinamool Congress against its cadre.

The party wants to maximise the pooling of anti-BJP and anti-Trinamool votes in Bengal.

Apart from strengthening the chances of the CPM and other Left candidates in the constituencies where the Left Front is strong, the Bengal unit wants to have an alliance with the Congress in rest of the seats to check the division of anti-Trinamool votes.

The Bengal comrades believe that only a joint platform with the Congress would be able to send out a clear message to the electorate, especially the supporters of the two parties that they are serious about fighting against BJP and the Trinamool Congress. However, Kerala unit is wary about the impact of Congress-CPM joint front in Kerala.

"The CPM will not form any front to fight the elections. There is no joint front between the Congress and CPM. It has not been decided yet. The issue has not come before the party central leadership.

But the CPM is ready to support any party which is capable of defeating the BJP. In some places it will SP, RJD or any other party," Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

When asked whether the CPM will support the Congress applying the same yardstick, Mr. Balakrishnan said in such cases the party units of the respective states will take appropriate decision based on the local situation
