NCBC for 27 per cent quota for OBCs in pvt sector

The commission has written to the ministry and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in this regard.

New Delhi: A government panel has recommended 27 per cent reservation in private sector jobs for candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), a statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has recommended that a legislation be passed under which private entities, including businesses, hospitals, schools, trusts, etc. will have to reserve 27 per cent of jobs for OBCs.

The commission has written to the ministry and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in this regard.

Commenting on the matter, social justice minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot said, “An official-level committee has been formed and the committee is consulting industrialists and corporate leaders as to what can be done on this.

“The committee meets from time to time to discuss the issue but no such atmosphere seems to be building for the same. The same issue is there concerning SC/STs and is being discussed for a long time. It is difficult to implement the recommendations without the consent of the sector concerned.”

A senior NCBC member said there are fewer opportunities in government sector and thus the private sector should be tapped for providing jobs to the people belonging to this category.

JD(U) welcomes NCBC move

The Janata Dal (United) on Tuesday welcomed the recommendation of National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) to reserve jobs for the marginalised sections in the private sector, saying that it would support any such notion both inside and outside the Parliament.

The party leader K.C. Tyagi said that weaker sections of the society cannot be deprived from the jobs in private sector, which is growing at a rapid pace in recent times.

“The JD(U) supports the reservation for OBCs in private sector. The commission’s report has rational in it.

“At a time when entire nation is being privatised and disinvestments are being done, the weaker sections of the society cannot be kept away from the jobs.

“The JD(U) will support any such initiative both inside and outside the Parliament,” he said.
