Greater Chennai undergoes radical changes as EC sets ball rolling on Assembly polls

Chennai: With hardly three weeks left for the model code of conduct to come into effect, Greater Chennai is undergoing a radical changes as civic bodies are vying with each other to improve infrastructure. Government hospitals, bus shelters, Marina beach stretch, interior roads are all undergoing face lift ahead of Assembly polls.

For instance, the government general hospital which has been promoting master health check up for years will now provide the same facility with a corporate ambience, where a receptionist and huge marine tanks will welcome the common man.

“The Amma master health check up centre is ready for commissioning and includes state-of-the-art equipment on par with corporate hospitals. The idea is to prevent lifestyle diseases and help public avail of the best check up at an affordable charge”, said Dr R. Vimala, dean, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. We are equipped with latest scan machines and digtal x-rays and can serve 100 people a day, she added.

Similarly the state highways and city corporation are also gearing up for the last minute hurdle. While the state highways has expedited its Anna arch grade separator work, the department has now starting laying arterial roads in Chennai including the Kamaraj Salai connecting Foreshore estate and secretariat.

Restoration of median works is also underway along the arterial GST road. The city corporation to its part is now widening the beach service road into four lane that connects fishing hamlets with Foreshore estate.

“Chennai floods damaged all the bins placed along Marina and the corporation has now started placing new dustbins along the three kilometre beach shoreline. Currently the make-shift shops are also regularised, so that the beach view is not hindered and the litter can be collected from a particular spot,” said Nisha Thotta, founder, Shudda.

The Greater Chennai Corporation is also speeding up stormwater drain work in R.K. Nagar, Anna Nagar and Sholinganallur area. Storm drains costing '41.22 crore are now progressing at fast pace in 11 wards aimed at alleviating flooding.
The landmark Kalaivanar Arangam is also ready for inaugural with escalators and a modern theatre equipped with high end surround music systems.
