FIR on Tamil Nadu cop in Delhi
Chennai: The New Delhi police on Monday registered a case against Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer R. V. Varun Kumar for criminal intimidation and intention to insult the modesty of woman after he allegedly sent goons to Delhi to threaten his ex-girl friend Priyadarshini, who is fighting a case of dowry harassment against him.
The FIR was registered by Pandava Nagar police station in East Delhi nearly four months after the complaint was lodged. The FIR was registered only after Priyadarshini approached the court seeking to know the status of her complaint and the cops were forced to register a case since the court demanded an action taken report (ATR) on the issue.
On the night of October 14, 2015 while she was walking back home in East Delhi, a gang in an autorickshaw followed her, threatening her and abusing her in Hindi and Bihari, besides asking her to withdraw the case she had filed against Varun Kumar.
“The men sitting in the back stated they would kill me if I did not withdraw the case. They also threatened me with molestation and of stripping me,”
Priyadarshini, now married to a lawyer and settled in Delhi, said in her complaint.
Priyadarshini also claimed that after she lodged complaint against Varun Kumar he had threatened her in a similar manner in Chennai, besides intimidating her lawyers and her husband’s family.
Varun Kumar, the IPS officer, who was arrested in connection with demands for dowry from Priyadarshini, was suspended in 2014 and then posted last month as assistant superintendent of police of Tamil Nadu commando force.
The government decided to give him the posting after the Central Administrative Tribunal set aside his suspension and he had also obtained a stay on the trial in his case.
