Animals in Visakhapatnam Zoo neglected
Visakhapatnam: The wild animals and birds housed at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in the city are developing stereotypical behavior due to space constraint in the cage and lack of activities that the zoo authorities should have carried out to keep them engaged.
“One of the major causes is that the zoo lacks expert biologists who are responsible for researching on the genetic structures and life cycles of the animals and also study animal behavior in their habitat, study genetics of animals, carry out research on effects of environmental changes on the animals,” a wildlife expert Prithvi Raj said. Ironically, for such large number of species in the zoo, only one biologist, that too on a temporary basis, is working with the zoo.
Zoo curator B. Vijay Kumar said the zoo needed more biologists to check abnormal behavior.
