If Jallikattu is banned, then why not biriyani, asks Kamal Haasan

He said jallikattu should not be confused with the bull fight in Spain, where the bulls are injured and sometimes get killed.

CHENNAI: Expressing strong support to Jallikattu, actor Kamal Haasan on Monday asked if those who are opposed to Jallikattu could ban biriyani too.

“I am a big fan of Jallikattu and steps should be taken to hold the traditional game of the Tamils. Those who hate Jallikattu should also hate biriyani. Will they ban biriyani too in the same way they banned Jallikattu”, he asked.

The veteran actor said Jallikattu should not be confused with the bull fight in Spain, where the bulls are injured and sometimes get killed.

“I am probably one of few actors who have played Jallikattu. I am a proud Tamilian, this is our culture,” he said.

In the state of Tamil Nadu, bulls are considered as deities and reared like children. In Jallikattu, the bulls are not harmed or injured, he pointed out, talking to reporters at the sidelines of a conclave here.

Earlier too, after the Supreme Court banned Jallikattu, ruling that the state’s age-old practise amounts to cruelty to animals, the south Indian movie star came out in strong support of the ‘sport’ and about the importance of resuming the ‘sport’ in Tamil Nadu.

“It is about taming the bull and not causing them physical harm by breaking its horns or other parts,” the 62-year-old actor had told reporters.
