Mahbubnagar: Government primary school students can't write their own names
HYDERABAD: Students in Class II to V at a government primary school in Mahbubnagar district were unable to write their own names and that of their parents correctly in Telugu, exposing the abysmal standard of education just 90 km from the city.
Children in Class I were unable to read the Telugu alphabet, collector D. Ronald Rose found for himself during a visit to the school in Vallabha-raopally in Mahbubnagar district. The village is 20 km from Jadcharla, 70 km from the state capital. Outraged, the collector suspended the principal Bhanu Prakash and four teachers.
Complaints filed against teachers in Hyderabad
A teacher union leader said parents from this school had complained to the district education officer M. Somireddy about the teachers. “Out of the seven teachers, five were found to be negligent. It was brought to the DEO’s notice, but he did not take action. The villagers then met the collector in this regard who made a surprise inspection,” he said.
United Teachers Federation general secretary Chava Ravi said the incident was a big setback at a time the people were losing confidence on teaching in state-run schools.
Reports said the collector reached the school by 10 am and checked the attendance register. He went to Class I and asked the children to read a few alphabets, which they could not do.
He then went to Class II, skipped Class III and went to Classes IV and V, where children were unable to read a Telugu lesson given to them. The collector asked them to write their names and the names of their parents and most of them could not do so correctly.
Mr Rose gave the principal and teaching staff a dressing down and asked them where their own children were studying. They reeled out the names of a few private schools.
