Overspeeding claimed most lives in road mishaps this year in Hyderabad

Police release five-year data; helmet-less riding tops violations

Hyderabad: Overspeeding was the biggest killer in this year’s road fatalities in Hyderabad.

According to latest data with the city police, of 237 fatal accidents, 178 were caused by over-speeding. Meanwhile, not wearing a helmet tops the list of traffic violations with 39 lakh cases.

City police commissioner Anjani Kumar said that overall accident cases have been coming down since five years. In 2017, there were 2,367 accidents, the next year it was 2,540, while the figure stood at 2,493 in 2019 and 1,843 in 2020. This year till November, a total of 1,657 cases were reported.

Apart from 178 fatal accidents, 13 were for drunk driving, 10 for wrong-side driving, six involved minors and 24 were for careless driving, said the data. Among vehicles, most fatalities were goods carriages with 43 cases. Apart from that, 24 were bikes, 14 four-wheelers, eight of auto-rickshaws and two deaths caused by ambulances.

The most number of traffic violations after helmet-less riding was triple riding on bikes with 1.12 lakh cases, as compared to 1.07 lakh last year. Around 75,000 were booked for not stopping on stop lines at signals, 76,000 for over-speeding/dangerous driving, 17,359 for penetrating into ‘no entry’ zones, 40,274 for signal jumping, 34,191 for cell phone driving, 21,041 for drunk driving and 28,320 for driving without a number plate.
