Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police on Sunday announced a new WhatsApp helpline number — 7901114100 — on which it will receive complaints.
In a Twitter post, the Cyberabad police official handle noted that this number would only temporarily replace its regular WhatsApp helpline (9490617444) which has been blocked by WhatsApp.
“Request to find the change for time being (sic),” the tweet read.
Deccan Chronicle had reported on Sunday that the regular number had been deactivated by Whatsapp after it received a surge messages after the Disha rape. Whatsapp considered the surge suspicious.
Cyberabad police IT cell inspector P. Ravindra Prasad said, “Since the incident, we have received a lot of messages. They wanted to know if the number really worked. It seems WhatsApp thought this was fishy behaviour and blocked it.”
The Cyberabad police is attempting to get the regular number up and running again. “Since WhatsApp has no office or contact person in the city, all our communication with them is through email,” said Mr Prasad.
