Traffic violators be ready to shell out more as fines

The proposal has already sent to the government the Home Department for approval.

Bengaluru: With steep rise in the number of vehicles and poor infrastructure, the number of accidents has also gone up. Traffic violations are rampant and although the traffic police do carry out drives against violators, it hardly acts as a deterrent as the fine amounts are low.

Hence the transport department is planning to increase the fine amount, ranging from double to ten times, to bring down violations.

A senior RTO official told Deccan Chronicle that the fine rates will be similar to what Telangana state recently implemented. “The amount will be double compared to present fine amount. So we believe this will make the commuters think before violating rules," he said.

A RTO source said that as per the proposed bill the fine for illegal parking will be increased to Rs 1,000 from Rs 100 and for those driving without a licence it will be Rs 500 from the current Rs 100.

The proposal has already sent to the government the Home Department for approval.

"All other violations including speeding, drunk driving and lack of proper permit and other documents will be included in this new rule. This will definitely bring down accidents and other violations," an official added.

Meanwhile the Union Cabinet has approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016 and the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is hoping the new bill will bring down accidents by 50%.
