Centre may set up steel plants in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

The Centre also announced a scrap-based steel factory in Palwal.

Hyderabad: The Central government may set up steel plants in Bayyaram in Telangana and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.

Union minister for steel Birendra Singh said on Friday that the final report on the feasibility of setting up the plants is ready. “The task force has created a good report,” he remarked.

Speaking at the diamond jubilee celebrations of NMDC, Mr Singh said, “Due to the persistence of Mr M. Venkaiah Naidu the task force was constituted. We will submit the report first to the Vice President and then make it available for the public.”

It may be recalled that as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, the Centre through the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) would explore the feasibility of setting up steel plants in both the states.

The initial report was not favourable to the Telugu speaking states. However, a task force was constituted to explore the matter further and it is this report that the steel minister was referring to. The Central government also announced a scrap-based steel factory in Palwal.
