GHMC gives solace to mourners
Hyderabad: The condition of the decades-old Panjagutta graveyard located among prime commercial properties, will finally improve, with the GHMC sanctioning Rs 3 crore to build a VIP ghat similar to the one in Jubilee Hills Road Number 45 as well as other infrastructure such as five platforms and restrooms.
The contractor for the work, Phoenix Foundation, that built the first modern graveyard, has been given three months to complete the work.
The foundation stone for the modernisation of the graveyard was laid on Wednesday by Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan who said, “In Panjagutta graveyard, apart from basic infrastructure there will be a VIP ghat, five platforms, rest rooms and other basic minimum facilities. This will create a soothing environment for the disturbed family of the deceased.”
The city currently has one modern graveyard, given the title of ‘Mahaprasthanam’, located on Road No 45 in Jubilee Hills. GHMC claims this crematorium creates no pollution. There is abundant greenery, chanting of Bhagwat Geetha hymns through audio equipment, a cafeteria, wi-fi, shower rooms and lockers.
Close to 60 per cent of graveyards in Greater Hyderabad do not have these amenities. They don't even have compound walls. Several cases of encroachments are pending in courts. None of the graveyards has basic amenities and minimum necessities such as store rooms, public toilets or enough lighting.
