Convert Poes Garden into memorial: TNCC
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress chief Su Thirunavukarasar on Thursday demanded that J Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence, where she lived for more than four decades, be converted into a memorial for the late Chief Minister. Speaking to reporters in Erode, the TNCC chief said the government should acquire the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa, known as Veda Nilayam, and ensure that the materials used by Jayalalithaa, besides her numerous prizes and awards, are kept on display.
Meanwhile, a petition launched by a Chennaiite, K. Shanmugam, on the international online petition platform called Change.org, asking the government to take necessary steps to convert her Poes Garden residence into a memorial so that there is a place for her supporters to visit and cherish her memories, has received more than 13,000 signatories in just a day. The Change.org petition says that the Poes Garden bungalow, acquired by the late CM’s mother Sandhya in 1960s, has emerged as an important place in the history of the state and needs to be preserved.
“There is no harm in paying the necessary price and taking over the said property and its artifacts…timely action is needed to honor the people’s affection towards their iconic leader,” the petition said. Meanwhile, an AIADMK delegation met Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy urging the government to install a life size bronze statue of Jayalalithaa in the union territory.
