Tirunelveli: The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (Pmane) has demanded a white paper from the department of Atomic energy (DAE) under the prime minister’s office about the alleged cyber attack on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).

Submitting a petition in this regard to the Tirunelveli district collector, Shilpa Prabakar Satish on Friday, the Pmane coordinator, Dr S P Udayakumar said that the issues they have been raising about KKNPP on the safety side, however, has been brushed aside as unwarranted by the authorities.

Now, it has been proved to have some basis as the Nuclear Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) in its official statement on October 30 admitted that one of its computers in the administration side in the Kudankulam plant had been found to have infected with a malware.

“Being the largest nuclear park in the country, having uranium stock and spent fuel rods inside it, KKNPP’s control system coming under a cyber attack, reportedly originated from North Korea, is not anything ordinary to ignore,” said anti-nuke activist, Udayakumar.

He demanded a white paper on the present safety of the KKNPP from the prime minister’s office ministry, under which functions the Department of Atomic energy (DAE).

The Pmane coordinator too wanted a status report on the safety of the nuclear project from the Tirunelveli district collector, Shilpa Prabakar Satish, who is also the chairperson of the district disaster management authority (DDMA).

The district collector, receiving their petition, promised appropriate action and assured to forward it to the government.
