Long wait for Kerala health varsity affiliation

There are nine SME institutions - six nursing colleges, two pharmacy colleges and one offering various courses at Gandhinagar.

Kottayam: The School of Medical Education (SME) institutions which were previously under the MG University are yet to get the affiliation from the Kerala University of Health and Allied Sciences (KUHAS), even after classes of the graduate and postgraduate courses started.

In July, the KUHAS governing council had decided to give affiliation in principle to the SMEs and granted a year to abide by norms in appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff. However, the affiliation process has not started.

KUHAS registrar M.K. Mangalam told DC that certain technical delay was obstructing the affiliation. “The process is ongoing, and the affiliation will be given within a short period,” she told Deccan Chronicle. S. Rejiram, director of the SMEs, also shared the hope.

There are nine SME institutions - six nursing colleges, two pharmacy colleges and one offering various courses at Gandhinagar.

They were previously like a department of the MG University. However, the KUHS Act made it impossible to continue, and a special society was constituted to run them.

According to Section 50 1 of the KUHS Act 2010, all institutions except professional medical colleges or teaching institutions under deemed universities and the national institutes are barred from conducting courses in modern medicine, dental, nursing, pharmacy and other paramedical and allied subjects.

Meanwhile, the second and third-year students will get MG University certificates.
