Chennai: A Good Samaritan railway porter in Tambaram railway station, who found a bag with Rs 5.75 lakh, handed it over to the passenger, winning praises from his superiors.

Poyyamazhi is a porter attached to Tambaram railway station. But his poor background and low income did not deter him from taking moral route when he found an unclaimed bag with Rs 5.75 lakh on November 1 morning.

A southern railway official said that upon knowing that it contained money, he alerted the duty pointsman and station master, who in turn alerted the railway protection force.

“RPF lost no time in tracing the passenger on a train nearing Chennai Egmore. Meanwhile, the passenger who lost the bag, after alighting at Chennai Egmore, gave a complaint about his missing bag. And he was immediately alerted that the bag has been traced and the bag was returned to the passenger” added the railway officials.

When the passenger wanted to give a cash award to Poyyamozhi for his honesty, he refused to accept the cash award.

“It is worth recalling that on an earlier occasion the unassuming Poyyamozhi had reunited runaway children with their parents while serving at the station,” added his workmate. In recognition of his honesty, Naveen Gulati, Divisional Railway Manager, visited Tambaram station, appreciated Poyyamozhi, and gave him a memento.
