Toxic froth forms at RK puram again

The drain carries excess water from the lake downstream.

Hyderabad: Stubborn froth has pushed open the cover of yet another stormwater drain at Devi Nagar Colony, near the Ram Krishna Puram Lake. This sudden frothing has occurred after a gap of two months, causing locals to become extremely worried.

Locals say that the stormwater drain in question has been under construction for the past five months, but ten per cent of the work has yet to be completed. The drain carries excess water from the lake downstream. Froth has begun to accumulate in areas where the drain has yet to be completed.

The Pollution Control Board has directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to install sandbags, wire mesh at problem areas. However, these plans have not been implemented at any of the lakes in the city.

B.T. Sreenivas, a resident of Devi Nagar, says, “We have placed a tarpaulin sheet on top of the froth to prevent it from spilling out onto the roads and getting onto vehicles and pedestrians.”

Locals attribute the re-surfacing of the froth to the increase in the number of illegal slaughterhouses in the area. J.R. Devender, a local resident, says, “Illegal slaught-erhouses continue to ope-rate unabated. He claims to have been threatened and manhandled by the owners of slaughterhouses for filing complaints against them.
