Governor Banwarilal Purohit goes to Delhi, will meet bigwigs

The Governor will attend the Governors' Conference to be chaired by the President on October 12 and 13 in New Delhi.

Chennai: For the first time after assuming office, Governor Banwarilal Purohit has gone to New Delhi. He will be there for six days during which he will attend the Governors’ Conference and meet top brass of the NDA Government to brief them about the political situation in Tamil Nadu.

Purohit is likely to meet President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other leaders in what his office says would be “courtesy calls” since he will be meeting them for the first time after being sworn-in as Tamil Nadu Governor last Friday.

The Governor will attend the Governors’ Conference to be chaired by the President on October 12 and 13 in New Delhi, besides meeting senior leaders of the government. During his meeting with Singh, sources said, Purohit is likely to brief him about the political situation in the state, where the ruling party is battling a rebellion by T.T.V. Dhinakaran. Eighteen MLAs owing him allegiance have been disqualified from their positions by the Speaker and that move has been challenged in Madras High Court.

The High Court has also imposed a stay on conduct of floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He is also likely to broach the topic during his meeting with Kovind and Modi. The Governor’s role will be crucial when the court lifts the stay as almost entire Opposition and the TTV camp is on the same page demanding that the EPS-OPS government prove its majority in the House. The Opposition parties have also knocked at the doors of the Rashtrapati Bhavan seeking President’s intervention in the issue.
