Alappuzha: The Mavelikara police has arrested five people for assaulting a couple at Mavelikara on Saturday.
According to the police, the accused have been identified as Kannan, 37, Kunnumpurathu Vadakkathil, Kandiyoor, Ananthu,22, Kandathil, Vasisht, 18, Chembanparambil, Anoop,26 Manapurathu and Mithun, 28, R.M. K Mandir.
The incident took place Saturday noon while Sivaprasad, 31, Siva Bhavan, Muthukulam South, and wife Sangeetha were unwinding at Kandiyoor Kadavu on the bank of Achan Kovil river.
Sivaprasad, who is an NRI, came to Mavelikara along with his brother-in-law and wife for booking fight tickets. Since the ticket booking got delayed, they chose to spend some time at the river bank. Kannan, who was taking bath at the kadavu, questioned the couple mistaking them as lovers.
Despite the couple showing their wedding photo, Kannan continued misbehaving with them. He called in his friends and picked up fight with Sivaprasad and his brother-in-law. The couple were admitted to the government hospital, Mavelikara. The accused have been remanded to judicial custody, police said.
