2 kayakers drown in Kozhikode

Tragedy strikes after water level rose suddenly in Kadantharappuzha.

Kozhikode: Two people of a five-member team which was training in kayaking in Kadantharappuzha in Maruthonkara panchayat in Kozhikode district lost their lives when the water level rose suddenly on Sunday.

Elvin Lonan (42) from Alappuzha and Naveen Shetty (40) from Bengaluru drowned while undertaking training in their fibre boat. Mani Santhosh from Bengaluru and Amit Papa (Uttarakhand) and Babu Preeth (Delhi), who were also part of the team, managed to escape the water fury.

The bodies were recovered downstream in the river and have been taken to Government Medical College, Kozhikode, for post-mortem.

Six people had drowned in the same area where water level rises without warning, local residents said.

It is understood that the team had not obtained permission from authorities concerned for training at the spot.
