In South India, Andhra Pradesh tops in pothole mishaps

Defective speed-breakers with engineering flaws also caused many deaths in AP, where 201 people died in 2016.

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh has the dubious distinction of the highest number of deaths due to potholes in South India, which claimed 131 persons, while Telangana reported three deaths.

Defective speed-breakers with engineering flaws also caused many deaths in AP, where 201 people died in 2016.

Telangana witnessed 65 deaths. Stray animals and badly-lit roads also add up to the fatalities, according to a ministry of transport report.

Mr T. Krishna Prasad, TS director-general of road safety, said, “In Andhra, there are many villages near National and state highways and speed-breakers are common. Villagers themselves put up speed-breakers at many places which are found to be defective.”

On kutcha roads in AP, 930 persons were killed in 2016 and in Telangana 886 persons breathed their last.

Mr Krishna Prasad added, “Telangana saved 549 lives till this year due to interventions. The figure came down due to check on over-speeding, removing engineering defects, traffic awareness and campaigns against drunk driving.”
