Srisailam’s stablity is under question

The minutes of the meeting indicate that there is an urgent requirement to focus on the status of flood review of Srisailam.

KURNOOL: With Srisailam reservoir all set to reach full capacity, the question on its structural stability has been raised again. But officials claim everything is perfect.

Srisailam dam superintendent engineer M. Sreenivas Reddy said all repairs to the dam had been carried on as per the suggestions given by the National Institute of Oceano-graphy (NIO) at Goa which had conducted a detailed study of the dam.

With regard to the ‘plunge pool’ that is formed by water falling from a height, Mr Reddy said the NIO had videorecorded the formation. Any advisory it gives would be implemented, he said.

The plunge pool was formed in an extent of 400 metres, out of the total length of 594.36 metres. The water impact has been meticulously studied, it is learnt.
It may be recalled that Srisailam dam, which is designated as a dam of national importance, was reviewed by National Committee on Dam Safety on February 12, 2019.

The minutes of the meeting indicate that there is an urgent requirement to focus on the status of flood review of Srisailam.
