Era Anbarasu, Former Congress MP, dies

He was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Chingleput constituency in 1980.

CHENNAI: Former Congress MP from Tamil Nadu and senior party leader Era Anbarasu, died on Thursday at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 78. Anbarasu was under treatment in the last few days after he took ill, sources said. He is survived by his daughter.

A forceful speaker and campaigner for the Pradesh Congress, Anbarasu had been elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Central Chennai constituency in 1989 and 1991. He was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Chingleput constituency in 1980.

However, recently in a cheque bounce case in July the Madras High court upheld a lower court order in a cheque bounce case and sentenced him to undergo two years imprisonment.

It was said that when he was chairman of the Rajiv Gandhi memorial charitable trust, he had obtained a loan of Rs. 35 lakh in 2002 from a private financier. The latter went to the court for recovery of loan and Anbarasu had reportedly issued a cheque which had bounced and hence the case.
