TD, YSRC to support Congress in Rajya Sabha poll

No clear indication whether tie-up will stay for LS polls.

Hyderabad: Once arch rivals, the Telugu Desam (TD) and the Congress are now moving closer in Parliament. The Telugu Desam has decided to vote for Congress candidate B.K. Hariprasad in election for the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman on Thursday.

Two days ago in the Rajya Sabha, Congress members voted for TD MP Mr C.M. Ramesh in the polls for Public Accounts Committee members and the latest decision by the TD is seen as reciprocation. The YSR Congress has also decided to vote for the Congress candidate in the election.

After breaking ties with the NDA, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TD president N. Chandrababu Naidu has become a bitter enemy to the BJP. In Parliament, the TD and the Congress are moving together against the BJP.

The Congress has supported the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led NDA government which was moved by the Telugu Desam.

Mr Naidu sharing the dais with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and AICC president Rahul Gandhi on the occasion of Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's oath taking ceremony also indicated the intention of the Congress and the TD.

However, it is not yet clear whether the tie-up between the TD and the Congress will be limited to the Floor of Parliament or it will continue in the ensuing general elections.

Meanwhile, former Union minister and MP Y.S. Chowdary also said that the party would vote for Mr Hariprasad in the election to be held on Thursday. Speaking to media on Wednesday, he said it was the direction of Mr Naidu. The TD has six members and the YSRC has two members in the Rajya Sabha. The support to the Congress from the TD and and the YSRC was unprecedented.
