SC refuses to entertain plea to stay Madras HC verdict
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a plea for stay of the Madras high court order directing the Tamil Nadu government to allot land on the Marina beach for burial of the mortal remains of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who died on Tuesday.
An oral mention was made in the afternoon by a junior lawyer representing Traffic Ramaswamy, before a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi seeking permission to file an appeal against the High Court verdict.
Justice Gogoi told the counsel “file a proper special leave petition and make a mention before the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
Earlier in the day, the HC by an order asked the state government to provide land on the Marina behind the Anna Memorial for burial of the mortal remains of Karunanidhi. This order was made possible by the withdrawal of three petitions pending in the High Court relating to challenge on construction of memorials on the Marina. The Tamil Nadu government had cited this as the reason for allotting land opposite Anna University on Sardar Patel Road, Guindy. Traffic Ramaswami was one of the petitioners.
