Public bike sharing to be a reality soon: Mayor Sampath Raj

We had made a detailed report about the PBS and sent it to both city traffic police department and BBMP.

Bengaluru: Though the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) had sent a proposal to BBMP to approve the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) system a couple of months ago, nothing much has been done. Now the city Mayor has assured that it will be passed in the next council meeting to be held next week.

The PBS system proposal was submitted to the BBMP a day before the model code of conduct for the assembly election came into effect.

But the PBS proposal is yet to be moved to the council meeting and BBMP officials claim they have more pressing issues to discuss.

A DULT official said, “We have no clue why it is being delayed and every time we ask the BBMP, they tell us that they were not able to move it to the council meeting and will take it up in the next.”

“We had made a detailed report about the PBS and sent it to both city traffic police department and BBMP. While the traffic police department made observations and conducted a reccee and even granted permission, the BBMP are yet to look into it,” the official added.

The cycle enthusiasts in the city have expressed frustration against the BBMP and are planning to seek Home Minister Dr G Parameshwar’s intervention.

When asked the proposal, city Mayor Sampath Raj said that it will be approved on Monday during the council meeting. He told Deccan Chronicle, “I agree there was a delay due to various major issues, but we will approve it in the next council meeting. We have gone through the detailed report submitted by the DULT and the concept is excellent. Such initiatives are needed for the city. We can assure the DULT that they will have our support to implement the project.”

Once the proposal is approved, the DULT will require a month to get the PBS rolling in the city.
