Monsoon alert: Telangana faces drought with deficit rain

Normal rainfall in Telangana is 239.8 mm; in the current monsoon season, the state has received just 146.2 mm.

Hyderabad: Of the 584 mandals in the state, as many as 305 have not received a drop of rain in July, indicating the magnitude of deficit rainfall. Another 183 mandals have registered deficit rainfall of 20 to 60 per cent, according to latest data available.

Out of 31 districts, 24 have had deficit rainfall; only in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal, Malkajgiri and Wanaparthy has the rainfall been within the normal range. The state government faces a drought in a majority of mandals if this situation continues.

Bhadradri Kothagudem and Jayashankar Bhupalpalli districts have received highest rainfall of 241.7 mm and 217.6 mm respectively in July 2017. Nagarkurnool received the lowest rainfall — just 83.1 mm. The worst affected are Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal and Peddapalli.
