Harish Rao seeks 15 TMC ft release of Krishna waters

The minister wrote to his Karnataka counterpart M.B. Patil to release waters from the Almatti or Narayanapur dams immediately.

Hyderabad: Reacting to the acute drinking water shortage for Hyderabad city and Nalgonda district on account of dwindling levels at the Nagarjunasagar dam, irrigation minister T. Harish Rao on Tuesday requested the Karnataka government to release 15 tmc ft of Krishna waters immediately to tide over the crisis.

The minister wrote to his Karnataka counterpart M.B. Patil to release waters from the Almatti or Narayanapur dams immediately. He stated that the water level at Nagarjunasagar dam was at 500.5 ft against the minimum draw down level of 510 ft, which is just not sufficient to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad city and fluoride affected areas of Nalgonda district.

He asked Mr Patil to instruct officials to release water from Narayanapur as Telangana state would be barely able to sustain the water supply without any inflows into Nagarjunasagar.
