12-year-old boy dies of dengue in Edappadi

The patients were left to suffer without proper bed facilities at the Salem government hospital, as affected persons kept pouring in.

Salem: A 12-year-old boy from Edappadi in Salem district died without responding to treatment for dengue at the government hospital on Monday.

The boy, R. Selvaraj, studying class five at Nachiyur Government Middle School, was admitted in GH at Edappadi for fever 10 days ago. As the boy was found with symptoms of dengue, the boy was shifted to Salem Government Hospital for further treatment.

However Selvaraj died without responding to treatment on Monday. More than 300 persons are undergoing treatment at the GH for viral fever and dengue. As the affected persons kept pouring in, the patients were left to suffer without proper bed facilities in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Salem district collector V. Sambath, who convened a meeting to review dengue control measures, said that around 2,595 temporary staff has been appointed, newly in the public health department to take up fogging and prevent mosquito breeding at the larvae stage.

In total, 10,000 workers have been involved in mosquito eradication by making door to door visits in the district. Besides roping in experts from neighbouring districts to take up mosquito prevention activities, as many as 2,055 school head masters have been sensitised on keeping the environment clean and maintain hygiene to curb mosquito breeding.

Over the last one month, 'nilavembu kashayam' has been given to around five lakh people in public places, including the railway station, bus stand and people gathering spots. As part of the awareness drive, the Corporation Commissioner R. Sathish on Tuesday inaugurated a sensitisation campaign by students at Ammapet.
