Hyderabad varsity forms panel for transgender students

The committee was formed on the heels of five students applying as transgenders for admission into the university this year.

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad has formed a committee to look into issues concerning transgender students on the campus and to facilitate a transgender friendly atmosphere in the university.

The seven-member committee is headed by Prof. Meena Hariharan of the Centre for Health Psychology. The committee was formed on the heels of five students applying as transgenders for admission into the university this year.

The committee includes two student representatives who would be preferably be transgenders. Last year, Nalsar, Hyderabad, had issued the country's first gender neutral degree to a transgender student with the title of Mx.

The UoH committee has been entrusted with task of ensuring that the university has infrastructure like separate washrooms to make transgender students feel comfortable in the university and also to conduct sensitisation programmes on campus for other students and teachers.
